Oxygen is the clock on every trip. The places worth going — deep industrial wrecks, the frozen Depot, the jammer facility — all cost air to reach and air to get back from, and a starting suit does not refill itself. This page covers the refill routes confirmed in the Early Access launch build, the numbers a player measured during it, and the planning habits that keep a long pull from ending as a corpse in a hull.
How do you refill oxygen in Breathedge 2?
Four methods are confirmed in the launch build. A fifth you will see in other guides is not.
| Refill route | What you actually do | Numbers (community-measured) | Reliable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public Oxygen Station | Repair it once, then reuse it forever | Repair: 3 Metal + 2 Electronics + 1 Wire + 3 Electrical Tape | Long trips out of Outskirts |
| Oxyworm Nest | Interact with the nest on the spot | Direct oxygen restore, no crafting | Emergency top-up mid-pull |
| Purified Oxygen | Craft from harvested worms | 2 Oxyworm + 1 Metal + 1 Ice → restores 120 | Carried reserve for one-way distance |
| Oxygen terminal | Feed it Ice | Ice is the input, not water | Refills where a terminal exists |
| Unconfirmed in this build | No verified numbers | Nothing — guides citing it are recycling game-1 data |
The practical read: stations and nests are free but fixed, Purified Oxygen is mobile but eats Ice, and Ice is the resource both your water and your air depend on. Location-by-location placement of the fixed points is on the map and locations index.
How do you fix the Public Oxygen Station?
Repair it the first time you can afford it and Outskirts stops being a survival puzzle. The measured recipe:
| Ingredient | Amount | Where it realistically comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Metal | 3 | Reverse-lookup on the materials hub |
| Electronics | 2 | Appliances (a washing machine is the classic donor) and electronic scrap |
| Wire | 1 | See the Wire page for the confirmed method |
| Electrical Tape | 3 | Cut off taped pipes — not in loot boxes |
Two of those four are why players stall. Electronics feel scarce early because they sit inside objects you must interact with instead of picking up, and Electrical Tape hides in plain sight on pipework. Both are covered in materials: where to find everything and the Wire page, with the tool action each one wants.
What do Oxyworms and Oxyworm Nests do?
Two different things, and mixing them up costs players a trip:
- Oxyworm Nest — interacting with the nest restores oxygen directly. Nothing to craft, nothing to carry. It is the single best thing to notice while you are already low.
- Oxyworm — the harvested item. Two of them plus one Metal and one Ice become Purified Oxygen, which restores 120.
That 120 figure is the one to plan with. Against a 600-unit starting tank, one Purified Oxygen is 20% of a full bar — so four of them recover 480 of the 600, and they fit in a bag where a station does not. Worms are your mobile reserve, nests are your free anchors. The recipe sits in the wider list in crafting recipes.
Why does the oxygen terminal want Ice?
Because Ice is a two-front resource in this game. The same floating chunks you process into drinking water are what an oxygen terminal consumes for refills, and the community walkthrough that produced these numbers reports it as a hard lesson: convert all your Ice into water early and you have no refill fuel left when a station is out of range.
The rule that follows: keep a separate Ice stack for air, one you never spend on water, and only process the surplus into drinking water. Thirst in this build drains faster than it did in the first game — that much is broad agreement in Steam reviews, with players asking for a middle difficulty between Standard and Hard — so the water side is genuinely demanding. There is no reliable numbers table for thirst yet, so this page does not invent one.
How much oxygen do you start with, and can you upgrade it?
- Starting suit capacity, measured in the launch build: 600.
- Purified Oxygen restore: 120 (20% of that bar).
- Tank capacity upgrades in Early Access chapter 1: not verified.
Guides promising you an upgraded tank that doubles capacity are describing the first game, and demo-era numbers do not carry over — RedRuins said publicly that the 2025 festival demo was rebuilt from scratch and “almost nothing from it is staying”. Anything about oxygen from before launch is a claim to test, not a fact to plan around. Suit-side gains you can confirm here are protective modules rather than air capacity; see suit upgrades.
How far can you go on one tank?
No verified burn rate in seconds per unit exists, so anyone quoting a range in minutes is guessing. Measure your own, then plan against it:
- Refill to 600 at a station or nest and start a stopwatch.
- Drift idle — no sprinting, no thruster — until the danger warning hits.
- Halve that number. That is your safe round-trip window, because you burn it going and coming.
| Situation | Planning rule |
|---|---|
| Route inside station range | Refill on the way back; skip reserve crafts |
| Route past station range | One nest or one Purified Oxygen per leg of the return, not one for the trip |
| Deep industrial pulls | Two Ice minimum: one for the terminal, one to drink on the way home |
| Depot / cold runs | Oxygen and Cold Protection are separate budgets — a full tank does not survive a frozen zone |
| First 30 minutes | Treat deaths as normal; the opening beats are lethal on purpose, so learn the layout before committing to a long pull |
That last row matters more than it sounds: the most repeated community complaint is that an early set-piece kills nearly every new player, so your first oxygen measurement is only useful after you survive to a station. Route order is in the chapter 1 walkthrough, and beginner tips covers the first-hour mistakes that waste a reserve.
What is still unconfirmed about oxygen?
A day-one Early Access gap list, on purpose:
- Seconds of burn per oxygen unit, and whether cold, heat or radiation drain it faster.
- Whether any EA recipe raises tank capacity, and its cost if it exists.
- Whether Oxygen Candles return in this game at all.
- Oxyworm respawn timers on nests, and whether stations double as storage.
Anything here gets added once a second playthrough or a datamine confirms it, with the verification date updated at the top.
